Experience & Career
I am a Master in Bio-engineering (KULeuven, 2003) but my professional career went beyond that: I was a public servant in land management, agricultural economist in development cooperation, project coordinator in spatial planning, web editor and web manager at a monthly magazine and data journalist at a national news paper. However, two things are shared between all my jobs: communication and working with numbers, data and maps.
Freelance Data Designer
2017 - present
From January 2017 on I am a freelance data journalist, visualizer and consultant.
2014 - 2016
I looked for stories hidden in data and told them with charts and maps. I produced static and interactive graphics and assisted the print papers graphics desk with data driven visualizations. I designed and developed news apps for readers and tools for editors in the newsroom. I gave trainings on data journalims, data visualization and mapping.
Webmaster at MO.be
2010 - 2014
I managed the content and technology of MO.be, the website of the (then) monthly magazine MO* on international politics. I experimented with new forms of digital storytelling, data journalism and data visualization. I managed the transformation of the website (design, architecture and functionality) when the magazine pivoted to digital first and became a quarterly.
2008 - 2010
I coordinated a spatial planning programme on forest extension and water management, spanning the surface area of 3 Flemish municipalities. I coordinated different planning processes and tried to implement them on the ground, working with local officials, civil servants, forest owners, nature conservationists and land owners.
2006 - 2008
I evaluated agricultural development projects with small scale farmers and indigenous people, working in one of the bigger development ngo's in Bolivia. I collected and reported income data based on interviews and supported the ngo's activities by making maps.
2004 - 2006
Initially, I supported land management projects by providing GIS support. Later on, I assessed the impact of those projects on farmers by conducting desktop analysis and collecting field data, mostly interviews with farmers.
